A small, inconspicuous hill in the countryside with a beautiful panoramic view invites unsuspecting hikers to rest. On the small hill, there is a very large cross. Unusually large—one would expect such a cross on a high mountain peak. However, the cross, if one knows the story, seems to be a memorial for all those killed and a defense against evil.
A wooden bench underneath completes the scene. Nothing reminds one of the horror tragedies that took place at this small location. Gruesome things happened at this small, inconspicuous spot. Not only in this century but also hundreds of years before. The Galgenbichl of Schongau. A place that feigns harmony!
The "Galgenbichl" on the outskirts of Schongau bears its name rightfully. Here, two robbers and murderers from Unter- and Oberammergau, as well as the maiden Magdalena (who killed her illegitimate child), were put on trial. They were hanged there.
But another piece of horrific history was written there:
The Murder of the Century of Schongau.
The crime took place on April 24, 1970, and turned the scene into a true battlefield.
At that time, there was a barrack for resettlers where six bodies were found, all of whom died by firearms. The deceased were two married couples and two men.
Initially, the investigating officers assumed a murder followed by suicide, as they broke a window of the barrack and initially only found the dead Baryszow couple in their bedroom. The husband lay on the floor with a Wehrmacht submachine gun between his legs.
The wife, however, lay on the bed, and half of her head had been shot off! Furthermore, a pistol and a small-caliber rifle were found in the room.
◆ The Horror Within the Barracks ◆
Upon further inspection of the barracks, the officers were met with an even more gruesome sight.
Four more bodies were found.
The background could never truly be clarified. Revenge is assumed to be the motive, as a suicide note was found. The perpetrators—the couple found first—are said to have lived in a constant state of delusion. They assumed their fellow residents were Russian agents who were threatening their lives.
What seems strange and leaves room for speculation are the following words left behind by the murdering couple:
"Do not blame us, good people, that it has come to this. Whoever did us wrong, we have taken our revenge on them. We have decided to enter eternal rest. There isn’t much time left for you either to shimmer in this world, Baryszow friends. Kostia and Warwara."
A postscript follows:
"Perhaps someone among you will find out where my son Gregory is; then tell him Mother cried for him very much, holding the weapon of death in her hands. Let him know that we are no more. Forgive us for everything if we owe anyone anything."
The murdering couple was buried in an unknown grave in Schongau.
The barracks have since been demolished.
With the knowledge of these tragedies, one can no longer view the place neutrally. Nevertheless, energies can be felt even by the unknowing. Our compass went crazy on-site as well as in the surrounding area. Perhaps this is due to something entirely worldly, however. Unfortunately, we were not able to find out.
The fact is, gruesome murders and killings have taken place at this location for hundreds of years. It seems as if this piece of land triggers or attracts ruthlessness. Ground soaked in blood and suffering. Is the place cursed? What is the reason? Something that remains inexplicable to this day.
